Liverpool ruin Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United return

Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai goals ensured Liverpool ruined Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United homecoming with a 2-0 victory at Bramall Lane.

The Dutch centre-backfired home from a first-half corner and Szoboszlai added a second at the death to give the Reds all three points in South Yorkshire to extend their Premier League unbeaten run to eight games.

Jurgen Klopp’s men closed the gap on league leaders Arsenal to just two points.

Wilder was condemned to defeat in his first game back as Blades manager, two-and-a-half years after he left in March 2021, following Tuesday’s sacking of Paul Heckingbottom.

This was United’s 12th defeat from 15 games and although they are only four points behind Luton, they look to have a mountain to climb.

Prediction: Fiorentina vs Juventus

Best odds: 3/2

Bookmaker:

Fiorentina will be playing host to Juventus in what should be an exciting contest at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday evening, withing the 11th round of the 2023/24 Serie A roller coaster.

Six points separate the two sides at the moment, with Fiorentina sitting sixth on a tally of 17, while Juventus, with 23, trail only leaders Inter Milan by two. It means that if Inter lose to Atalanta in Bergamo on Saturday, the Bianconeri will have the chance of taking the top spot for themselves.

Fiorentina

It s been a relatively good start to the season for the Viola, who have accumulated five victories, two draws and three defeats in the 10 league games played so far. Their last game, however, away to Lazio on Monday, ended in heartbr…

Borja Mayoral leaves Real Madrid for Getafe in permanent transfer

Real Madrid have confirmed the departure of forward Borja Mayoral, who has joined Getafe on a five-year deal.

The 25-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with Getafe, scoring six goals in 18 matches, and leaves Madrid after 15 years associated with the Spanish giants.

With Madrid, Mayoral has won the Champions League, Club World Cup, Super Cup and Supercopa de Espana, although he never quite established himself as a regular within the first-team squad.

Mayoral made his debut for Madrid in 2015 but subsequently went on loan to Wolfsburg for the 2016-17 season, returning to the Santiago Bernabeu the following year.

A two-year loan with Levante was followed by a two-season spell with Roma, which was cut short in January with Getafe takin…

Prediction: Czech Republic vs Turkey

Best Odds: 8/11

Bookmaker:

With a spot in the knockout stage of this summer’s European Championships hanging in the balance on Wednesday night, the Czech Republic will meet Turkey in Hamburg.

Czech Republic

Starting with the Czech Republic, missing out on what they had billed as a golden opportunity last weekend as they eventually had to settle for a 1-1 stalemate against Georgia, Ivan Hasek’s men find their knockout stage dreams hanging in the balance here. Mustering just a single point from any of their opening two EURO 24 appearances this summer, the former Saint Etienne boss will be calling on his squad to make a crucial statement here. However, despite failing to open their account over in Germany, the Czech Republic have suffered just a pair of defeat…

Switzerland 2-0 Italy: What Were The Main Talking Points As The Reigning Champions Crash Out In Berlin?

Putting in a nightmare performance on Saturday evening, reigning champions Italy relinquished their European crown as they slumped to a routine 2-0 defeat against Switzerland in Berlin.

Although the Azzurri might have always been set for a stern examination in the German capital, they were completely outclassed from the opening whistle as they limped their way out of this summer’s tournament.

Watching the Swiss take a deserved lead in the 37th-minute as Remo Freuler powered past a helpless Gianluigi Donnarumma, they only further established their dominance after returning from the half-time break.

Flying out of the traps following the interval and doubling their advantage just 27 seconds later as Ruben Vargas produced a thunderous strike, the Rossocrociati wil…

Klopp hopes Firmino can feature against Everton after missing Man Utd rout

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hopes to have Roberto Firmino available for the Merseyside derby against Everton.

Brazil forward Firmino sat out due to a foot injury on Tuesday as Mohamed Salah s double, as well as goals from Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane, led the Reds to an emphatic 4-0 win over Manchester United, sending Liverpool top of the Premier League ahead of Manchester City facing Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday.

Liverpool are now unbeaten in their last eight Premier League games against United, winning five and drawing three, the joint-longest run any team has enjoyed against the Red Devils in the competition (also Chelsea between 2013 and 2016).

After the dominant victory, in which Mane started as a central striker with Diogo Jota named on the bench, K…

A Premier League winner and ex-England international – Danny Drinkwater retires

Premier League winner Danny Drinkwater has announced his retirement from football.

The 33-year-old midfielder was one of the stars of Leicester’s shock title triumph in 2016, earning a big-money move to Chelsea the following summer.

But he did not manage to establish himself as a first-choice player at Stamford Bridge and unsuccessful loan spells at Burnley and Aston Villa followed along with disciplinary problems.

He pleaded guilty to drink-driving after crashing his car in 2019, suffered an ankle injury in an incident outside a nightclub later the same year and head-butted then Villa team-mate Jota on the training ground in March 2020.

Drinkwater’s last appearances came on loan at Reading in 2021-22, following which his contract with Chelsea expired…

Chelsea 2-2 Wolves: Coady stuns Blues with stoppage-time equaliser

Conor Coady scored with almost the last touch of the game as Wolves fought back to draw 2-2 with Chelsea on the day a £4.25billion sale of the Blues was agreed.

Todd Boehly, who leads the consortium that will complete a takeover later this month, was in attendance at Stamford Bridge as Romelu Lukaku scored his first Premier League goals since a 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion on December 29 to put the hosts 2-0 up before the hour mark.

Substitute Trinaco set up a dramatic finale, though, with a sumptuous goal 11 minutes from full-time.

Coady then popped up in the seventh minute of stoppage time to head home Chiquinho s cross and seal the most unlikely of points for the visitors.

Mauricio Pochettino admits some Chelsea youngsters struggling with pressure

Mauricio Pochettino admits some of Chelsea’s younger players are struggling with the pressure of playing for the club.

The big-spending west London side have floundered in mid-table all season, with their summer overhaul of bringing in young talent from across Europe so far yet to bear fruit.

Chelsea had the chance to claim a trophy last month, but a number of missed opportunities cost them dear as they lost the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool after extra-time.

And Pochettino believes not all of the club’s signings have settled in as well as star man Cole Palmer, who scored his 11th Premier League goal of the season during the Monday’s 3-2 win over Newcastle.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s FA Cup quarter-final with Leicester on Sunday, Pochettino said…

Liam Scales hoping for strong end to season as Celtic aim to secure double

Liam Scales surveyed a potentially glorious end to Celtic’s season following their epic Scottish Gas Scottish Cup semi-final win over Aberdeen on Saturday, but knows there is still plenty of work to do.

A dramatic 6-5 penalty shoot-out victory over the Dons at Hampden Park followed a 3-3 draw and it booked the Hoops a place in the May 25 final against Rangers or Hearts, who face off at the national stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Parkhead side are three points clear of their Old Firm rivals at the top of the cinch Premiership with five post-split fixtures remaining, one of which is the visit of Rangers to Celtic Park.

Scales acknowledged the importance of momentum going into the business end of the season.

“We are coming in strong to the last part of…
